Roadtrip 2
07 October Continued - New Orleans - Alabama | |
---|---|
Lake Punchin' Train | |
Mississippi...not quite like coming home.
More like driving into crazy town.
We got lost in Hattiesburg...which is basically a ghost town with a McDonalds and 10 cops in it. | |
Mississippi is creepy.
We did have (seriously) "The After-Church Home Country Buffet" I don't know why we didn't take a picture of that... | |
I don't really have anything nice to say about Alabama either... We stopped and asked for directions from a group of locals. I must have approached them wrong, because they acted like I wasn't there for a few minutes. In fact they didn't say anything until we finally said "uh...Thanks...bye..." All of the sudden they were super friendly and showed us the way. After seriously pretending we weren't there at all for a LONG time.... Just so you know....Susie May is doin' just fine, but Sally Sue had a cold last week.

08 October 2007 - Fort Payne, AL - Williamston, NC | |
We drove a super long way today... and we spent a good while behind an SUV filled with green peppers...and one red pepper. | |
We stopped for a great lunch in Asheville, NC today. This is a really cute town. Two thumbs up for Asheville. | |
Well...here we are at the Ross Motel in Williamston, NC. Local Entertainment = Pitt's County's Most Wanted on public access.
$2500 Reward for Lee Boyd...I wonder what Habitul Domestic is anyway... | |
09 October 2007 - Williamston, NC - Assateague Island, MD | |
North Carolina cotton fields | |
More cotton | |
Crossing the Chesapeake Bay Tunnel - Bridge | |
Coast to Coast! | |
We stopped for crab cakes on the Virginia Shore | |
There are lots of old abandoned houses along Chesapeake Bay | |
Chincoteague Island, VA | |
10 October 2007 - Assateague Island, MD - Lyme, CT | |
What a night! We camped on the beach at Assateague hoping to see some wild ponies. We did see some in the distance, but about 30 minutes after we went to be we saw the first flash of lightning, the heavens opened and we got soaked! The storm lasted almost until sunrise. I think we got about an hour of sleep before we finally decided to just pack up and get a move on. | |
Somewhere, behind all those clouds, is New York City. | |
Welcome to Connecticut... where the sun never shines... | |
Wild Turkeys! | |
Roadtrip 1
Jess and Sam Coast to Coast - October, 2007 | |
---|---|
01 October 2007 - Los Angeles, CA - Grand Canyon National Park, AZ | |
01 October 2007 - After a final sweep through the apartment (thanks again to all of our helpers), we hit the road and were out of LA by 7:00AM. We quickly realized that even though we'd rid ourselves of nearly all our worldly belongings, we still had too much stuff. So we made a quick stop in Barstow to ship another box...Barstow is really boring. | |
Just over the border in AZ...After five hours in the California desert, these rocks seemed really interesting. | |
It started to rain about an hour before we got to the Grand Canyon. It was pretty exciting to see water, since we were both starting to get a little nutters in the desert, but we were still none too happy at the prospect of camping in the rain. | |
When we finally arrived at our campsite, we found a furry new friend waiting for us.... | |
02 October 2007 - Grand Canyon National Park, AZ - Socorro, NM | |
After a wet night, we woke up to some big elk sniffing around our tent. Have you ever noticed that every time you try to take a picture of an elk, you get a picture of an elk's butt? | |
The Grand Canyon,what a ... grand ... canyon.
| |
A slightly less, but still quite grand canyon on the Navajo Reservation. | |
Cool rocks on the Navajo Reservation. | |
We stopped for lunch at a little restaurant on the reservation and had Fry Bread Sandwiches, basically a funnel cake with a little bit of meat in it...I wouldn't recommend it. | |
After lunch, we headed back out to the open road. | |
...and drove, and drove, and drove. | |
Have you ever wondered what it looks like if you take a picture though a pair of binoculars? Sam has. | |
Woohoo!!! | |
03 October 2007 - Socorro, NM to Carlsbad Caverns, NM | |
Funky lava rocks on the side of the road... | |
Three days on the road and it's starting to show... | |
Despite my sister's warnings, we stopped for lunch in Roswell, NM. It's amazing how disappointing something can be even when you know it's going to be disappointing. | |
This is the only form of alien life (or intelligent life) we came across in Roswell. | |
A cool old building in Carlsbad. | |
Carlsbad Caverns, NM | |
The men's bathroom 750 ft below ground. | |
If you look very closely at the center of this picture, you'll see a (very big) rattlesnake. Carlsbad Caverns was the land of unappealing critters...Our campground had a family of skunks that were really interested in our dinner. We got as far away from them as we could and eventually they lost interest. They came back when were in our tent. I think I'd rather camp in bear country than skunk country. Finally at 5 in the morning a big wild boar walked right past out tent. Unfortunately, no photos of these wildlife encounters. | |
Oh yeah...lots and lots of bats. | |
04 October 2007 - Carlsbad Caverns, NM - Beaumont, TX | |
Breakfast in Ozona, TX....really, really good. | |
And really, really hot. | |
Really hot. | |
Sam ate a Chorizo breakfast burrito in a barn...happy boy. | |
Texas Haiku:This state really sucks. Get me out of Texas, now. It's a damn long drive. | |
05 October 2007 - Beamont, TX - New Orleans, LA | |
Avery Island, LA (The Tabasco Factory) | |
Entering New Orleans | |
Bourbon Street | |
Bourbon Street | |
Rain! | |
06 October 2007 - New Orleans, LA | |
Lunch at the Napoleon Cafe (he slept upstairs) I had red beans and rice, Sammy had the Jambalaya. | |
Banana's Foster at the Court of the Two Sisters | |
| |
On the road out of New Orleans | |
We saw lots of dead alligators on the side of the road, but no living ones...Road Kill Alligator still counts right?
If you aren't bored stiff yet, click here to see more!! | |
Because something relatively interesting happens almost every day
